This week in Parliament, all eyes will be on the Budget Speech by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on Wednesday, 19 February, where the government’s fiscal plans will take centre stage. Ahead of this, several key committees will meet to discuss critical policy and governance issues. On Tuesday, 18 February, the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs will deliberate on political party funding and donation disclosure thresholds, while the Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade will receive briefings from the National Consumer Commission (NCC) on its second quarterly progress report and the government’s response to the national foodborne illness crisis. The Portfolio Committee on Social Development will focus on the SASSA black card swap process and ongoing challenges with long queues and service shortages. Meanwhile, the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry will assess the DTIC’s financial and non-financial performance, and the Portfolio Committee on Minerals and Petroleum Resources will examine the state of South Africa’s petroleum industry.

On Wednesday, 19 February, discussions will shift to security, governance, and infrastructure. The Portfolio Committee on Police will review the SAPS Safer Festive Season operations, efforts to combat extortion-related crimes, and challenges within the Detective Services. The Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration will scrutinise public sector recruitment reforms and the alignment of the National Framework Towards Professionalisation of the Public Sector with the Medium-Term Development Plan. The Portfolio Committee on Electricity and Energy will assess how SONA 2025 impacts energy policy and legislative priorities, while the Portfolio Committee on Land Reform and Rural Development will hear a ministerial briefing on the Land Reform/Redistribution Bill. Other committees will address key issues in defence, education, and human settlements, including progress on Slovo Park informal settlement upgrades and SANDF expenditure.
