This week, Parliament’s agenda features a blend of plenaries and committee meetings addressing critical legislative and oversight matters. It is the final week of regular programming before both houses enter a constituency period from 9–13 December and the annual leave period follows from 17 December to January.
Key committee meetings include the Portfolio Committee on Electricity and Energy’s full-day session on Wednesday. The Minister of Electricity and Energy, alongside Eskom, will provide updates on performance targets for 2024/25, progress on unbundling into three entities (Generation, Distribution, and Transmission), and Eskom’s Summer Plan. The National Transmission Company of South Africa will also brief the committee on its transmission development plan.
Also on Wednesday, the Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade will delve into the financial stability of Sentech (the signal distributor for the South African broadcasting sector) and the debt owed to it by the SABC and community broadcasters.
Wrapping up the week, Friday’s session of the Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure will include updates from the DPWI Governance Risk and Compliance Branch and the Special Investigations Unit on outstanding corruption cases. The committee will also consider and adopt the National Construction Summit report.
