• Statistics South Africa to Release the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the Second Quarter of 2026

Statistics South Africa publishes second-quarter employment data on Tuesday morning. The official unemployment rate rose to 32.7% in the first quarter from 31.4% in the final quarter of 2025, with unemployment among those aged 15 to 34 at 45.8%. Investec economist Lara Hodes expects the second-quarter reading to remain elevated at around 32.9%, with the first quarter’s declining labour force participation rate and rising underemployment suggesting a structural rather than cyclical deterioration. A print at or above 32.9% strengthens the case for interventionist labour and industrial policy responses and raises the political temperature ahead of the local government elections.

• Statistics South Africa to Publish Manufacturing Production Figures for June

Manufacturing production data follows on Tuesday afternoon. Output contracted 4.3% year on year in May, a materially larger decline than the market expected, following a 2.9% fall in April. June is expected to remain in negative territory, although base effects from June 2025 and the pass-through of higher fuel costs will shape the size of the contraction. Two consecutive quarters of manufacturing weakness feed directly into the second-quarter GDP print and complicate the Monetary Policy Committee’s room to cut.

• Presidency to Deliver Operation Vulindlela Quarterly Briefing

The Presidency will brief the country on the progress of Operation Vulindlela on Tuesday afternoon, with President Cyril Ramaphosa receiving the briefing at the Union Buildings. Updates on electricity transmission restructuring are expected to feature prominently. Separately, the National Union of Mineworkers will hold a media briefing in Johannesburg following its national executive committee meeting, where it is expected to formally oppose the restructuring and unbundling of Eskom and respond to the President’s approval of the Eskom restructuring task team phase one report. President Cyril Ramaphosa, joined by Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber, will launch the country’s electronic travel authorisation system on Wednesday. The system forms part of the Department of Home Affairs’ digital transformation programme and is intended to digitise visa application processing while strengthening border management. Faster, more predictable inbound processing is a direct input into tourism volumes, conference and events bidding, and the ability to move skilled personnel and clients into South Africa at short notice.

• Southern African Development Community Council of Ministers to Meet Ahead of the 46th Summit

The Southern African Development Community council of ministers meets from Wednesday to Friday as South Africa prepares to host and chair the 46th SADC Summit in Durban on 17 August. The summit theme is “Resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialisation through infrastructure development, agriculture and critical minerals transformation in pursuit of a just world”. South Africa’s chairship gives Pretoria agenda-setting influence over regional positioning on critical minerals beneficiation and cross-border infrastructure – both areas where regional policy alignment increasingly shapes market access for South African exporters.

• Statistics South Africa to Publish Mining Production Figures for June

Statistics South Africa releases June mining output on Thursday morning. Production fell 5.4% year on year in May and 5.2% month on month, the sharpest monthly decline since November 2025, as higher fuel prices and geopolitical uncertainty stemming from the conflict involving Iran raised the cost of running machinery and moving ore. A further year-on-year contraction is expected in June, although firm gold and platinum group metal prices continue to support sales values.

• African National Congress to Announce Mayoral Candidates

African National Congress secretary-general Fikile Mbalula confirmed last Friday that the party will announce its mayoral candidates on Saturday. The party’s local government elections manifesto launch will follow a week later, on 23 August. Candidate selection in the metros is the most reliable early indicator of both the ANC’s internal balance of power and its coalition intentions after the elections.
