This week in Parliament, all eyes will be on the National Budget Speech (version 3), also known as the tabling of the Appropriation Bill and tabling of Division of Revenue Bill, set for Wednesday 21 May. The parliamentary committees will also be engaging on a diverse range of crucial matters, including justice and reconciliation, infrastructure development, energy security, and international relations. On Tuesday, the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development will meet to discuss the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations. Simultaneously, the Select Committee on Education and Creative Industries will address the state of sports infrastructure and programmes in major metros, and the Portfolio Committee on Transport will review its expenditure and consider the Merchant Shipping Bill. The Portfolio Committee on Minerals and Petroleum Resources will receive updates on the turnaround initiatives for PetroSA and the merger of the South African National Petroleum Company. Additionally, the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation will engage with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Delegation and consider its expenditure reports.

On Wednesday, alongside the significant National Budget Speech, the Portfolio Committee on International Relations & Cooperation will examine US-SA relations, while the Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure will discuss plans to reconfigure the EPWP. A joint meeting of the Police and Agriculture Committees will address the implementation of recommendations from the State Capture report. The Portfolio Committee on Electricity and Energy and the Select Committee on Security and Justice will both meet with visiting United Kingdom Parliamentarians, and the Portfolio Committee on Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation will receive a briefing on the NSE Bill.

The week will continue with the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans meeting the UK delegation on Thursday to discuss international security matters, and a subcommittee reviewing National Assembly Rules. Finally, on Friday, a joint meeting of Finance and Appropriations Committees will receive a briefing from the Minister of Finance on the 2025 Budget Review, and the Joint Standing Committee on Defence will be briefed by Armscor on the maintenance and acquisition contracts for the SA Air Force and SA Navy.
