- Mbeki to Testify Before the Khampepe Inquiry Into Apartheid-Era Crimes
Former President Thabo Mbeki is scheduled to testify on Monday and Tuesday before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission cases inquiry, chaired by Justice Sisi Khampepe. The inquiry is investigating allegations of deliberate delays and political interference in the investigation and prosecution of apartheid-era crimes identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Former President Jacob Zuma had been due to appear on Thursday, but his testimony has been postponed following his recent hospitalisation. The inquiry tests whether political considerations shaped prosecutorial decisions at the highest level of the state, which goes directly to confidence in the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority.
- National Police Commissioner Masemola Returns to Work
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola resumes his full duties on Monday after six months on precautionary suspension, which President Cyril Ramaphosa lifted on Friday. Masemola was suspended in April after being charged by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac) with contravening the Public Finance Management Act in connection with a police health-care tender awarded to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. The charges were formally withdrawn in September.
- Sacci to Release September Business Confidence Index
The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry will publish its September business confidence index on Monday. Its previous survey showed confidence edging higher in July on the back of strong new-vehicle sales and export volumes, while warning that the outlook remains exposed to the Middle East conflict and disruptions to oil and commodity flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The index is an early read on whether the fuel-driven inflation shock is feeding into business sentiment ahead of the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement.

- IEC Faces Possible Ballot Reprints After Constitutional Court Ruling
The Electoral Commission of South Africa may have to reprint a significant share of ballots following last week’s Constitutional Court ruling on candidate lists. The commission has extended the same relief to 32 other affected political parties, a decision that could alter final ballots in more than one hundred municipalities. Special voting takes place on 2 and 3 November, with election day on 4 November.
- South African Reserve Bank Opens Payments Conference
South African Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago will open a two-day conference on Tuesday bringing together leaders, policymakers, regulators and innovators from across the payments ecosystem. The conference will focus on shaping the future of payments in South Africa and the region. The Reserve Bank is the primary architect of payments modernisation, and signals from this conference may indicate the direction of regulation on instant payments, digital assets and new market entrants.
- Business for South Africa to Address Logistics Reform Progress
The South African Freight and Logistics Association launches its Gauteng branch on Tuesday, with Ian Bird of Business for South Africa delivering the keynote address on tracking logistics reforms under the business-government partnership. The address comes as port and rail reform remains central to the government’s growth agenda. Business for South Africa’s assessment will offer a business-side view of how far port and rail reforms have progressed and where implementation is stalling.

- Stats SA to Release September Consumer Inflation Data
Statistics South Africa will publish the consumer price index for September on Wednesday morning, followed later in the day by August retail sales data. Headline inflation was 4.4% in August, and Absa economists expect a 0.2 percentage point uptick to 4.6%, driven largely by fuel price pressure. The print will shape expectations for the South African Reserve Bank’s next rate decision and confirm how far the oil shock is passing through to consumers.
- Godongwana to Deliver 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will present the 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement to Parliament on Wednesday afternoon. He is widely expected to trim the 1.6% growth forecast tabled in February, before the US-Iran conflict disrupted global energy markets, while updating Parliament on revenue and expenditure. Analysts point to possible silver linings, including a revenue overrun supported by higher gold prices and a narrowing of the budget deficit.

- Ramaphosa to Address Youth and Early Childhood Development Events
President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver two keynote addresses at the Galleria Arena and Conference Centre in Sandton on Thursday. At 09:00 he will address the Bana Pele Leadership Summit, which aims to mobilise stakeholders to deliver universal early childhood development services, followed an hour later by an address to a convention on youth unemployment. Youth unemployment remains the economy’s most acute structural risk.
- Election Campaign Enters Final Stretch
With just over two weeks until the 4 November local government elections, parties are intensifying their campaigns, with leaders of the major parties leading door-to-door activity across the metros this week. The EFF will close its campaign with a rally at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on 31 October, while the MK Party has cancelled its planned rally in favour of ward-level campaigning.
