This week in Parliament, committees are set to delve into a diverse range of critical issues, spanning from the sustainability of community media to the crucial management of the nation’s finances and infrastructure. On Tuesday, the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies will examine strategies for community radio station sustainability and digitisation, as well as the regulation of video-on-demand services. A joint meeting of the finance committees will consider the draft report on the Fiscal Framework and Revenue proposals, while the Joint Standing Committee on Financial Management of Parliament will address challenges facing the Parliamentary Medical Aid Scheme (Parmed). Furthermore, the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will receive a briefing on the outcomes of the District Development Model (DDM) pilot projects, and the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition will discuss the Transformation Fund. Multiple public hearings on the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill will also take place. Significant discussions will also be held by the Standing Committee on Appropriations regarding the 2025 Division of Revenue Bill, and a joint meeting of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources and Science, Technology and Innovation committees will be briefed on mineral beneficiation initiatives.
On Wednesday, the Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure will follow up on the Borderline One-Stop Border Post Project, and the finance committees will adopt their report on the Fiscal Framework and Revenue proposals. The Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade will assess local government’s capacity for Local Economic Development and mechanisms to monitor spaza shop registration. The Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition will continue its engagement with steel industry stakeholders on the Steel and Metal Fabrication Master Plan, and the Portfolio Committee on Electricity and Energy will discuss the gas industry and exploitation in the country, with a focus on the Gas Cliff. More public hearings on the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill are also scheduled.
As the week concludes on Thursday, the Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Public Administration will receive briefings from HAWKS, SIU, and NPA on the status of criminal cases related to illegal initiation schools and proposed amendments to the Customary Initiation Act. On Friday, the Portfolio Committee on Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation will receive briefings from Statistics South Africa, Brand SA, and its own Department on their respective Budget Votes and Annual Performance Plans.
