This week sees an especially full programme for the National Assembly (NA).
A number of reports of the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests will receive attention. Complaints against former Transport minister Dipuo Peters, EFF MP Floyd Shivambu and the current Minister of Police Bheki Cele will be considered.
The Economic Cluster will appear before the NA for a question-and-answer session on Wednesday. The DA will ask the Minister of Finance whether Treasury intends to budget no salary increases in the public sector for the 2024/25 financial year. The public wage bill remains a source of tension, especially after the minister’s medium term budget policy statement earlier this month. Good will be placing the Minister of Electricity under pressure with a question on the Just Energy Transition, asking what measures are in place to ensure that the difficulties experienced with the Komati Coal Power Station’s transition are not repeated elsewhere.
The African Post Office Amendment Bill will also receive attention. The bill aims to provide for the repurposing of Post Office infrastructure so as to provide diversified and expanded services and exploit the infrastructure capacity to extract value and forge partnerships with other stakeholders. This also comes after a business rescue plan for the Post Office was published last week.
On committee level the Public Procurement Bill will be discussed further on Wednesday by the Standing Committee on Finance.
