This week in Parliament: Public Protector and Avian Flu

On Thursday the National Assembly will vote on a committee recommendation that Adv. Kholeka Gcaleka should become the new Public Protector, following the parliamentary removal from office of Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane.     

The week also sees public hearings by the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry on the Companies Amendment Bill. The bill proposes much more rigidity in the disclosure of remuneration for workers and executives. 

The Select Committee on Security and Justice will hold deliberations on the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill, which provides for the offence of a hate crime and the offence of hate speech, and the prosecution of persons who commit those offences.

On Friday the department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and the South African Poultry Association will brief parliament on the Avian Infuenza outbreak which is affecting South African agriculture and business.
